what is one to do when the word sticks?
when it lingers around memories
hollowed out from remembrances
after the roaches scuttled off waxed hills and wooden dams
down three flights of stairs
where i examined it
eking across the linoleum.
through the kitchen wall,
i heard their disgust
scuffled between movements,
EEEWWWs, and AAAHHs,
as i washed the dishes.
and that little drama played
behind my averted gaze
fixed on this hardy bug's journey
from crack to crevice to door to dinner.
i felt the weight of my feet
heard the extinguished conversations
smelled the crusted red pepper
clinging to glass beakers
all aimed at you, my dear vermin
calling for a silence to echo
in the space between my feet and floor.
but not all memories weigh the same.
so, i watched the little roach return home
and walked down the stairs.
another day, i scuttled back, lost between misrecognitions and heavy pages.
and there i was, on the linoleum,
looking up to hear a quick conversation
trying not to be killed by irritated eyes
whose grace precedes mercy.
the words slipped by
maybe rushed by
unexpected thoughts
that still fell from above
and clung to my inside out ribs
